Power Conservation in 3V/5V Dual-Supply Systems
Power saving is the common denominator for lower supply voltage and portable electronic systems. The
paramount need in battery-powered and portable electronics―saving power―is also the major benefit in moving
from 5V to 3.3V (and lower) supply rails. Even so, most 3.3V designs include 5V ICs as well, as the industry has
not yet provided designers with a complete selection of 3.3V functions. Until it does, many portable products
must operate on a mixture of 5V and 3.3V ICs.
