The cost of running a car on electricity is equivalent to paying $0.75/gallon for gasoline, and if that electricity comes from carbon neutral sources, car owners are saving both money and the environment (gasoline com-bustion produces 9kg of CO2 per US gallon). Advancements in battery technology (see sidebar), especially with Lithium-based chemistries, hold the greatest promise for converting the worldwide leet of cars to hybrid or fully electric.
