As broadband connectivity adoption rate continues to increase
and the capacity of the underlying network continues its rapid
growth, moving and processing media content is taking center
stage in various segments of both the enterprise and the
consumer markets. The unstoppable move towards convergence
of data, voice and video processing onto an IP-based
network has had significant implication on the digital signal
processing performance requirements at various nodes of this
network. With applications ranging from live broadcast of high
definition television programming to real-time transcoding and
translating of video between Wireline and wireless networks,
video processing requirements have continued to increase in
complexity and performance. When one considers the sheer
volume of pixels that need to be captured, pre-processed,
compressed, packetized, possibly encrypted, and transmitted
in any real-time broadcast type application of high definition
video, particularly given the complexity of some of the latest
advanced video coding schemes (H.264 and WMV9), one can
easily appreciate the raw processing horsepower needed to
accomplish such tasks.
