Abstract: HSDPA offers theoretical peak downlink data rates up to 14 Mbps and increases the system capacity for downlink packet data. The increased data rates and improved capacity result in shorter delays for the end-users. This is particularly important for some multimedia applications such as interactive games. The high data rates also benefit streaming and web browsing applications. HSDPA is backwards compatible with Release 99 W-CDMA, although it has been added only to Release 5 and later releases. Since most of the modifications that HSDPA introduces occur in the downlink, the base station (BTS) transmitter and the user equipment (UE) receiver are mostly affected.
